2025 marks my 50th year as a professional freelance music writer (my first pieces that I got paid for, back in hometown Milwaukee, came in 1975). I've been freelancing regularly for Downbeat magazine since 1983, while also contributing interviews, feature stories and reviews over the past 50 years to such publications as Jazz Times, Jazziz, Guitar World, Guitar Club (Italy), Vibrations (Switzerland), Swing Journal (Japan), Hudba (Slovakia), International Musician & Recording World and many others.
