Marc PoKempner has made photos on assignment for newspapers, magazines and non-profit organizations for over 50 years on subjects including politics, arts & culture, immigration, housing, healthcare and Cuba.  Clients include Time, Newsweek, People, Business Week, Fortune, Forbes, Chicago Reader and New York Times Magazines, Ford, MacArthur, Rockefeller, Steans, Focus Infinity and the New Orleans Musicians’ Assistance foundations, and WWOZ.

He’s an alumnus of the University of Chicago and Minor White’s graduate photography program at MIT and is the author of two books - Down at Theresa's about Chicago’s Black neighborhood blues clubs and Harold! on Harold Washington, Chicago’s great Mayor. His photos are included in the permanent archives of the Art Institute of Chicago, Museum of Contemporary Photography, Peace Museum, Phototeka de Cuba, Polaroid Corporation and other private and public collections.

He now splits his time between Chicago and New Orleans and happily follows the music where it leads. A selection is on view at his website PoKempner.net.

PoKempner's Photographers Master Class is the fourth of a monthly series of interactive presentations by photographers involved with jazz among other subjects, discussing their careers, techniques, and approaches to current professional issues. He will be interviewed by Howard Mandel, president of the JJA, a longtime close friend and collaborator of PoKempner's.
