Three Approaches to Defining Jazz, with Mark Gridley and Robert Maxham, in The Musical Quarterly, 1989.
My interests in jazz are:
Creative improvised music by such contemporary performers as Mary Halvorson and James Brandon Lewis and Tyshawn Sorey as well as by such jazz elders as John Coltrane, Thelonious Monk, Miles Davis, Eric Dolphy, Bill Evans, and Sonny Rollins.
More about what I do:
I have hosted jazz radio programs for Minnesota Public Radio and for WQLN NPR (JazzFlight) in Erie, PA since 1973, www.wqln.org. I also host Collector's Choice and Nocturne on WETF.I am a voting member for Downbeat Critics Poll and the NPR Jazz Poll. I am a Board member of JazzErie, the jazz society for western Pennsylvania.
I support the JJA because
I learn from my colleagues in the community of jazz writers and broadcasters.
