More about what I do:
I covered jazz for the Seattle Times from 1982-2023 and also served as pop music editor until December, 2016. I was a regular contributor to Down Beat's Hot Box feature from 2000-2024 and continue to write for the magazine. I am the author of "Jackson Street After Hours: The Roots of Jazz in Seattle" and "Shall We Play That One Together? The Life and Art of Jazz Piano Legend Marian McPartland" and have taught jazz history at Seattle Pacific University, Cornish College of the Arts and at the University of Washington. I am currently working on "Outpost by the Sound: Seattle Jazz 1960-2020," due from The History Press in 2026. I also leading a group that designed a self-guided tour of Seattle's historic jazz district along Jackson Street.
